HTC teases a new VR headset

HTC is reportedly preparing to release a new VR headset in its popular Vive series. The company intends to release this new virtual reality headset before the end of the year.

The Vive Flow and the Vive Wrist Tracker were previously announced as new products by the company. These were both announced in October 2021 and January 2021, respectively. The brand's official Twitter account has now shared a new teaser that shows off the new VR headset with a compact form factor. The company captioned the tweet, "Go small or go home," and included a silhouette of the upcoming VR headset.

Furthermore, HTC also confirmed in the replies section that "We're working on something big… we mean small. It's a brand-new headset!" Interestingly, the company also sent TechRadar a press release that resembled the announcement of the HTC Vive Flow, which was its "first evolution" from the Proton project. In other words, the upcoming VR headset could be the project's "second" evolution or next-generation iteration.

As of now, finer details about this product, including its name, are unknown. For those who are unfamiliar, the Vive Flow was a pair of VR glasses that debuted with an innovative form factor but a hefty price tag of $499 USD. Despite its distinctive design, the Vive Flow was criticized for its poor performance and limited immersion. As a result, we can predict that the newer model will improve on this formula.

With virtual reality becoming more popular, more and more headsets are hitting the market. HTC has been a frontrunner in virtual reality with its Vive line of headsets. And it appears that the company is back with yet another set to strap to your face.

HTC teased a new VR headset with the tagline "Go small or go home" on Twitter with a teaser image. What makes us think it's a new headset? HTC confirmed this in the tweet's comments section, reiterating that it is smaller. The picture doesn't reveal much, but there are a few things we can deduce about this headset.

What we know so far about HTC's new headset

We already know that this is going to be a smaller headset. The size and weight of VR headsets are arguably the most common complaint. Because they're sitting on your nose for hours at a time, comfort is essential. With a more petite body, HTC's new headset should be lighter than previous models and the competition.

You can just about recognize the headset in question based on the image HTC shared. Have you noticed how these resemble sunglasses? That's because the futuristic Googles resemble last year's Vive Flow headset. Given the similarities in design, we'd expect these to be a second-generation update to the Vive Flow. Since the headset is still relatively new, we expect it to be high on HTC's list of things to bring back!

And it should be revived - the Vive Flow only received three stars out of five in our review, with controls, UI, and price areas for improvement. As a result, we predict some changes in these areas in the second-generation version. Otherwise, we don't know much about HTC's new headset.

While HTC has yet to announce, let alone release, the new headset, we expect it to hit stores before the end of the year. VR headsets are sure to be on many people's Christmas lists this year, and HTC is unlikely to want to miss out on the holiday cheer. More from the brand is on the way!
