HTC will reveal a new VR headset at CES that
will compete with Meta Quest.
HTC's mixed reality headset has been making headlines for quite some time. The new headset, which will support virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), is expected to make its debut on January 5 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023. An HTC executive reportedly teased the launch but did not reveal much about it. It is rumored to have a goggles-like design with front- and side-facing cameras. The upcoming device will compete with Oculus Rift models and Meta Quest products.
According to The Verge, citing Shen Ye, HTC's global head of product, the company plans to unveil a new flagship all-in-one AR and VR headset on January 5 at CES. The headset will be redesigned.
"It's about taking all of these advances we've made in not only the design aspects, but also the technical aspects, & building it into something meaningful and appealing to consumers," Ye is quoted as saying in the report.
The report also includes an image of the headset, which appears to be a goggles-style design. It appears to have front- and side-facing cameras, allowing for mixed reality. According to Ye, the headset is suitable for gaming, entertainment, exercise, and "even some of the more powerful use cases," such as productivity and enterprise tools. It is said to have a two-hour battery life and to support controllers with six degrees of freedom as well as hand tracking.
As the CES 2023 tech show in January approaches, brands are beginning to give out early previews of upcoming gear. HTC is the most recent to do so. While we already knew the company was going to CES, it has now confirmed plans to unveil a new virtual reality headset there.
According to The Verge, HTC will unveil a new VR headset at CES on January 5th. It will be a smaller, lighter all-in-one headset with virtual and augmented reality capabilities. HTC also teased a first look at the new goggles (see the lead image above), which do indeed have a goggle-like appearance with a gleaming glass front. It will compete with Meta's Quest 2 headset in terms of price and features.
This isn't the first time we've heard anything about HTC's new headset. In October, the company tweeted a cryptic teaser for the upcoming device. We didn't get much information from the first teaser. Fortunately, the brand has given us a lot more to work with this time.
HTC's new headset will most likely be similar to the Vive Flow, even sharing some design elements. We gave the original headset three out of five stars in our review, so we're hoping for significant improvements. In addition, we can see front-facing and side-facing cameras in the new teaser image. HTC confirmed that these cameras will enable an AR feature similar to Meta's Passthrough, which allows you to see your surroundings in full color while wearing the headset.
The company also revealed that the new headset will have a two-hour battery life, new controllers, and hand-tracking. While HTC has not confirmed the report, it suggests eye-tracking (similar to the recently released Meta Quest Pro) and encryption for more secure data storage. Pricing and availability will be announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Fortunately, we won't have to wait long to find out!
